This work was premiered in the theatre in 1929 before being adapted into a film in 1931 by Alexander Korda under the supervision of Pagnol. This is the first part of the famous Marseillaise Trilogy (followed by Fanny and César).
It tells the story of Marius, torn between his love for Fanny and his obsessive desire to set sail and explore the world. Faced with this heartbreaking dilemma, he ends up giving in to the call of the sea, abandoning his father César and the woman he loves to their destiny.
