Historic site and monument

Domaine de Bel-Air

Built in the 17th century for Louise de La Vallière (1644–1710), the Château de Bel Air was a gift from Louis XIV to his first great favourite, often described as “the one who loved the king, not the kingship.”

Architecturally sober, the château is an elegant rectangular one-storey building with tall windows and a staircase on each façade. Its slate roof is punctuated by dormer windows. Originally, a straight road directly connected the estate to Versailles.

Some remains of the park’s entrance can still be seen today. The château is now occupied by the headquarters of C.R.S. unit no. 8; on the first floor, the former bedroom of the Duchess of La Vallière now serves as the commander’s office.
